2010 Springtime Tallahassee Krewe Float
Each year the Springtime Tallahassee Krewes spend many hours preparing their floats for the Grand Parade. Not only is time spent decorating floats, but each Krewe puts a lot of thought into incorporating the Krewe's time period into the theme of the current year. Below are descriptions of each Krewe's detailed themes for the 2010 42nd "Leap Into Spring" festival.Themes and Descriptions
Spanish Krewe1528-1821
Ol'e! This year the Spanish Krewe celebrates the successful recovery of treasure from one of their sunken Galleons, The Nuestra Senora del Rosario. In 1622, a devasting hurricane claimed the King's fleet of treasure ships during their voyage back to Spain. According to legend, the "Rosario" sank in Apalachicola Bay after the storm blew it far off course. It now sits amongst a colorful reef, abundant with sea life. Spanish Conquistadors lead the Spaniards and their recovered treasure back to nearby Mission San Luis. Riding atop the treasure chest is Krewe Chief, Shane Boyd, and his lovely Senorita, Tammy. The Galleon has an enormous purple octopus sitting on its bow, a huge bull shark swimming through the wreckage and a big green eel weaving through the cannons. Jellyfish and a large stingray float alongside the sunken ship, while mother and daughter mermaids frolic beneath huge coral sea fans. American Territorial Krewe1821-1845 American Territorial's Krewe entry will portray The Great Train Robbery of 1841. Our beautiful Tallahassee was a town occupied by many law-abiding citizens, yet so filled with vice and lawlessness that a movement was started to relocate the capital. The train from Tallahassee to St. Marks was a crucial part of developement and commerce, and it became a target by some of the ruthless outlaws. Fortuantely, the newly- formed Tallahassee Police Department saved the day by foiling the plot of these evil-minded train robbers. Thus, their heroic efforts kept the train rolling to St. Marks and helped Tallahassee keep its status as the center of government for the territory of Florida. Antebellum Statehood Krewe1845-1860 On March 3, 1845, Florida becomes the 27th State in the Union. On December 29, 1860, the Union is dissolved. Antebellum Statehood Krewe celebrates the time in Florida history when Florida was becoming the state she is today. The state of water and sunshine, men re-located their families to Florida by the thousands to grow cotton, hay and tobacco on farms that spurred the economy and created the very foundation of the life we enjoy in 2010. This year Antebellum was inspired by the theme "Leap Into Spring". Our Cival War Era replica paddleboat float will be draped in multicolored flowers to evoke the feeling of joy and hope each new spring brings. We'll celebrate the spring season with a tip of the hat to the dog days of summer where life slows down, and kids spend their days at the frog pond with homemade cane poles, hopeful for the big catch of the day. War and Reconstruction Krewe 1861-1901 Tallahassee cattle drive, 1865 War and Reconstruction Krewe tells the "Moo-Ving" story about the Confederate Army surrendering 1,200 head of cattle to the union forces in Tallahassee in 1865. This "Cattle Drive" has bull riding, bucking broncos, saloon, jail, chuck wagon, and the loveliest can-can dancers in the South and that's no bull! 20TH Century Krewe 1901-1999
The 20th Century Krewe's float is paying tribute to America's Space Program. Note the space shuttle, Tallahassee; the moon's surface with astronauts, and NASA's mission control. Earth as seen from space highlights this float and what we have to celebrate in the our 20th Century. |
